Join us July 6th for Mike Edel, an indie-folk musician and former resident of Vancouver Island. Mike’s music is Bryan Adams meets Death Cab For Cutie, and he is hitting the stage with a full band for the first time after recovering from a stroke in 2021. Opening the night we have Nanaimo’s own Laura Kelsey, sharing her powerhouse voice and influences of metal, blues, folk, and West Coast elements.

About Mike Edel
Canadian singer-songwriter Mike Edel’s upcoming fifth full-length album and accompanying documentary, “casseroles & flowers,” set for release on July 22nd, 2022, encapsulates a journey of resilience and introspection following a stroke he endured in April 2021 while on tour with his wife, who was pregnant with their first child.
Through optimistic melodies and poignant lyrics, Edel navigates the complexities of hardship and heart, chronicling his stroke and recovery alongside themes of death, renewal, grace, physical deficiencies, and fatherhood. Co-written with Alexandra Niedzialkowski of Cumulus, the album delves into personal experiences in hospitals, vans, and new towns, portraying Edel’s determination to overcome challenges and pursue his passion for music despite adversity.
With his self-produced debut, Edel unveils a raw and vibrant portrayal of his journey, engaging listeners with relatable storytelling and genuine charm. Supported by a dedicated community and boasting over 6 million cross-platform streams, Edel’s latest offering promises to be his most compelling yet, resonating with fans of artists like Donovan Woods, Dan Mangan, and Noah Gundersen.
About Laura Kelsey
A WCMA-nominated singer living in Nanaimo/Snunemuxw First Nation Territory, Laura has fronted metal, blues and folk bands for over a decade. As a solo artist, she brings these musical influences together to create unique songs inspired by natural West Coast elements, honesty and dreams — all shared with a powerful, emotive voice. Her debut EP Hunting Season released in April 2023 and has been called an eclectic blend of genres that creates an “earthy magic.” In 2022, Laura performed at festivals like Islands Folk Festival (Duncan) and Sonic Summer Nights (Vancouver); and was the opening act for Matthew Good on his fall 2022 tour of Vancouver Island. She was nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award in 2014 as the singer for a symphonic metal band.
Laura now performs with her band, consisting of Cal Webb on lead guitar, Steve Barraclough on drums and Nyck Machura on bass.
